Five for Friday Pt. 14

Today is a very special edition for my sweet little boy’s second birthday.  This is the first time we’ll celebrate his birthday as a family.  I hope that this will be the first of many decades blowing out candles together with him.

Elian I love you more than you’ll ever know.  Here are five reasons why:

1) You are a dancer.  Please!  Your love of dance is my wildest dream come true.  Let it be known that you were trying to break dance far before your 2nd birthday.  Every day after work Papa busts out iTunes and you go crazy.  Your favorite songs are currently Boom Boom Pow by the Black Eyed Peas, Viva la Vida by Coldplay and Beggin by Madcon.  You have such excellent taste baby boy!

2) Your infectious laugh:  There is nothing like your laugh which lights up the room with joy.

3) The way you incline your head against us when your pleased:  I’ll be blunt: right now at this toddlery point in your life you are a royal pain in the ass.  You scream all the time.  It’s incredibly frustrating and annoying.  However!  At the end of the day when we cuddle and sing before bed and you snuggle close to us and smile, you pay us back tenfold.

I love you too buddy.

4) Your sweet voice:  Everyday you are learning new words!  Right now you like to say “Salta” (She jumped! -For when Nutella jumps), dede! (verde-for when the light turns green) and “agua” for when you want water.  You ask for water constantly.  You like to ask even more at other people’s houses.  This gives me people the impresison that we intentionally dehydrate you at home but the truth is there is never enough water.  You drink it in the bathtub just for fun.

Right now we still sleep in your room and while I’m excited to sometime have our own space again  I love to hear you talk to yourself at night and in the early morning.  My heart swells as I hear your tiny voice trying out new words.  Last night around 3 am I heard you mumble “Dede” and I smiled imagining you in your dream-world.  A magical land filled with all green-lights!

5) Just because:  Little one, you are our dream come true and we don’t need reasons to love you.  God created you special and perfect before we even knew we were on the path to become your parents.  Even if you have the audacity to become a pro-football player or something similarily ridiculous we will always love you!

At this time last year we were in Seattle breaking the news of our adoption to our family in Seattle.  While Elian was eating birthday cake with his foster family we were toasting our then unknown little one with my family.  And two years ago while Elian was making his grand entrance we were sleeping in Lanzhou, China.  Check out the story of the day Elian was born here.

Awesome!

Remember how Tío Andrés really wanted Elian’s first word to be “Awesome?”  Well his wish almost came true and I hope that he can accept second place.  Last week Tía Emily gleefully finished up the job that Andrés started last December and Awesome has now finished a strong third in the English vocabulary race having been bested by “See you later” and “Good Night”.

Payback

Anybody whose ever raised a toddler knows that it’s exhausting.  They just have.somuch.friggin.energy.slash.lung.capacity!  So add all of our other issues: adoption, small house, culture shock, new parent struggles together and sometimes it’s too much. TOO MUCH I TELL YOU!  Except that sometimes your kid is so ridiculously cute that you forget about all the other stuff.  Arnold likes to say that Elian pays us back in smiles.

I present to you Exhibit A.

And sometimes when he is feeling extra generous he pays us back in other ways too.  Like for instance this weekend when he started calling me Mommy.  I KNOW!  BIG DEAL!  He actually calls me Mommy all the time, just not when I’m around.  Apparently when I’m gone, he calls for me incessantly, but when I’m home he resorts to my other name which is “A BUBUBYAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!”

It’s hard to convey in print how high-pitched, whiny and irritating this sound is.  I’ll let your imagination guide you. It’s sufficient  to say it’s not my favorite.  So you can guess how  surprised I was on Monday morning when I opened the door to our bedroom and was greated by a triceratopcito bouncing in his crib, holding out his arms towards me with expectant eyes and a sweet grin while calling “Mama, Mama, Mama!”

Oh kiddo, that payback was worth like a thousand tantrums.

But no, I think Elian is remembering how hard those first weeks were for all of us so he pulled out another trick from up his sleeve… his first words in English!

On Sunday as we were heading out to visit his Godparents we waved goodbye in a cloud of “Ciaos” and besitos and all manner of dramatic goodebying.   Life with toddlers is very dramatic. I threw in a “See you later” for good measure and we stepped out into the blessedly warm April sun…. and my sweet little dinousaur turned to me and said in an extremely clear voice.

“See you yater!”

It was too much for me.  I buried my face in tiny neck and strangled him with a bear hug.  His little body curled around me like a tiny koala and we stood there together on the front walkway basking in the wonder of it all.  When I looked up, he gave me a smile that only a parent gets to see.  The one reserved for the moment they know the one that loves them most is irrationally proud.  A hopeful smile that says “Did I really do good?  Is it true you love me?”

Oh sweetie, you did really good.  I’m so proud of you and you’ll never, ever know how much I love you.

When I think of this moment in the future I know I’ll remember it as one of the first times we felt like mother and son.  I’ll remember standing there soaking in all his adorable softness and feeling a palpable connection forming between us: a thousand invisible strings tying my heart to his.  I’ll remember his head resting contentedly on my shoulder and his impossibly tiny hands wrapped around my neck.  And I’ll remember the moment we looked at each other with a mischievous grin  because we knew we couldn’t keep the moment to ourselves.  So we had one last laugh together before running back in the house to share the moment with Daddy.

Elian Vs. Arnold

Oh man I have been waiting SO LONG to publish this video!  I can’t even tell you how excited I am to share the awesomeness of this epic battle between my beloved son and my sweet husband.  This video was taken at Martiza’s parents house our first week in Colombia with Elian.  The whole week was equal parts overwhelming joy and nightmarish struggles. Because the adoption was not yet finalized I chose at that time to only write about the joyful moments but let’s get real, it wasn’t all fun.  Elian refused to eat anything but yogurt for the whole week among other issues.  Keep this in mind as you see my child battle with Arnold over his sovereign right to EAT ROCKS.  That’s right we spent the whole week stressing about his eating only to watch him sneakily try to devour pebbles at the playground.  We watched this video almost every night we were in Colombia and it still makes me laugh hysterically.  ENJOY!

PS-I can’t believe how much bigger he is now.  Crazy.

PPS – Thank you to everyone who shared their encouraging words and crazy parenting experiences yesterday.  I truly appreciate your support!
