Books that Made you cry
Before my list-a short note. I cry all the time. It’s embarrassing and problematic! To list every book that I’ve cried reading could be a daunting task, so I’m going to limit myself to the most recent books I’ve read that made me cry. Each of these books are top-notch and I enthusiastically suggest that you read them too. Conveniently I’ve also posted previously on most of them so you can click through on the title if you want to know more. Side note to my note-Some of the posts are really old so you’ll also get to see how much I used to suck at blogging, or rather, how much I’ve improved!
- The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri – Okay. I may be a cry baby, but you’d have to be made of stone not to cry at this one. I read the most dramatic part on a plane and had to curl up in the corner for fear the flight attendants would get concerned that I was having an anxiety attack. True story.
- Rockabye by Rebecca Woolf-I’ve gone on and on about how much I heart Ms. Bec, author of Girls Gone Child but this book came to me at just the right time. It chronicles her struggle to find her identity as a young mother and wife in a world where being a mommy=being tame. I read it while I was doing the same, except, not quite so young. Her honesty is astounding. Love.
- A Homemade Life by Molly Wizenberg-If I wrote a book I would aspire for it to be like Molly’s. This is the kind of book that makes you hungry, happy and touches your heart all at once. Brilliant.
- The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows-This books takes place during World War II. It makes you cry in a Life is Beautiful kind of way. I bought it for my Mom for Christmas. She protested that she didn’t want to read it and yet had read more than half of it the next day. Take that Mom! :)
- Holy Bible-I’ve turned to the Bible many a time with tears in my eyes. If you licked my bible it would be salty for sure. I have to say though, if you are in my house licking my bible I think we might have a problem.
Alrighty, these are the books that have touched my heart over the last few years. I can’t wait to hear about yours! Please remember to link to the specific blog post so that everybody can see your list without digging. And as always, if you don’t have a blog to link up feel free to play along in the comment section.

I think I cried reading parts of Becca’s book too. such a great read.
Wow, good list! I read The Interpreter of Maladies, which also was sad and compelling. Didn’t think of the Guernsey Potato Peel Society, also quite sad.
So fun making these lists, thanks!
I loved Interpreter of Maladies, too. I went to high school
with the author. She is, I think, our most famous and successful
alum! Haven’t read her newest book of stories yet, but can’t wait
to!
V. cool! Doesn’t that make you feel like the possibilities are that much bigger when someone you went to school with achieves something amazing?
I have A Homemade Life sitting on my shelf, WAITING to be read. I got it long ago (before I knew about her, or blogs!), and since I have discovered her and her blog, I am that much more excited to indulge- in the book, and the accompanying recipes!
I have #4 on my to-read list too! I look forward to checking out the top two.
Oh, Torrie you will LOVE Molly’s Book. I just know it!
#1 I have been wanting to read for a long time but I never got around to it.
It’s not a book, rather a short story, but I recommend Rachel Swirsky’s A Memory of Wind. Sad and beautifully compelling.
It’s a very spare book, in terms of how it’s written. Very different from what I’m usually drawn to i.e. not of the Bridget Jones/Celebrity Memoir variety. I’ll put a Memory of Wind on my list.
Ok, now I’m intrigued by A Homemade Life. If you’re into heartwarming tales of family you need to read Always Looking Up: The Adventures of An Incurable Optimist by Michael J. Fox.
You know what? I love celebrity memoirs, it sounds right up my alley.
These are the last five books I remember making me cry. (I didn’t include the Bible since you already picked that one.)
1. The Road by Cormac McCarthy — a similar experience to yours, Emily, crying on an airplane and trying to hide it.
2. Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkein
3. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
4. The Brothers K by David James Duncan
5. Pastor by William Willimon
Hmmm.. I am curious about this Cormac McCarthy character, will have to request it at the library.
McCarthy is not for the faint of heart. His books are by far the most violent I have read and truly frightening. The Road is no exception, but it is also deeply beautiful. I was the first person I knew who read it and after I finished, I was recommending it to just about anyone who would listen just so I could talk to them about it. I’m curious what you think about it.
Hmmm… Well I am a fickle reader and a first-class wuss, so if I get McCarthy and make it through I’ll let you know.
I’m going to join the List Love Book Club, but this 2nd
list is going to have to evolve. I have lots of books I love (which
you can find on my Goodreads
page–http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/4705693-beth). But I can’t
remember which have made me cry. Very odd really. I’m anticipating
taking note now of which ones do make me cry, and maybe I need a
separate list of those that make me laugh. I can come up with those
pretty easily!
Hi Beth, I’m excited you are going to join us! You can see next weeks topic up above under the Listography tab. Next week the link party will be hosted by Torrie at A Place to Share!
